EINDHOVEN – One of the icons of the Eindhoven music scene, Lady Aïda, has passed away. The Eindhoven DJ was 63 years old and died after a short illness.

Lady Aïda was the pseudonym of Aïda Spaninks, born in 1958 in Diessen, but raised in Eindhoven. In 1985 she started as a DJ and barkeeper in café Cul du Sac in Eindhoven. Then Aïda went from Cul de Sac via Café Sands on the Stratumseind ​​to Berlage on the Kleine Berg, all concepts in Eindhoven. Music was served in blocks in the Berlage: a block of disco, block of hiphouse, block of dance.

Pinkpop, Lowlands and Awakenings

She was one of the first popular Dutch house and techno DJs, a forerunner of men like Tiesto, Ferry Corsten, DJ Marcello and DJ Dimitri. It was a time when house DJs were pioneering, after an extensive period of disco and New Wave music. In 1993 Aïda got her own club night in the Effenaar. Later she played at major festivals such as Pinkpop, Lowlands and Awakenings. Lady Aida was also the founder of the DJ school Rebelbass in Pop-Ei and later at CKE, and training that is still there. Her last performances were in 2018 and 2019 in the Muziekgebouw and the Van Abbemuseum in Eindhoven, where she played Snooze Session reclining concerts.

In 2018, the VPRO made a documentary about 30 Years of Dutch Dance, with Lady Aida in a leading role. “The children I teach nowadays all think it started with Tiësto,” Spaninks said at the time. She witnessed the rise of the world-famous DJ from Breda and is still proud that the great Tijs ‘Tiësto’ Verwest was once in her support act. Spaninks had nothing to do with EDM, electronic dance music from the 90s and zeros. “That’s all devastating music, commerce and marketing,” she often said.

Sell ​​vinyl babies

In 2016, she decided to sell part of her 50,000-record vinyl collection. “Not because I’m going to stop, but I want to sell them to other DJs, who will also play them again. These are my vinyl kids, the black gold for DJs. There are unique copies among them, many records that have never been for sale in the Netherlands. All those records are in my soul.”
