For FC Emmen, the safe zone in the ranking has come one step closer. The Drenthe relegation candidate, who is working on an impressive catch-up race, won 1-3 at Fortuna Sittard and remained unbeaten for the seventh time in a row.
The number 10 (Fortuna) and the number 17 (Emmen) of the premier league made it a great battle in Limburg. Both teams worked hard and that resulted in some chances in the first half; Fortuna attacker Lisandro Semedo ran into Emmen goalkeeper Verrips after an action in the penalty area and Sergio Peña shot just over on behalf of the visitors.
After half an hour, Emmen was really close to the opening goal for the first time; Paul Gladon worked the ball into Fortuna’s goal, but the goal did not appear on the scoreboard because, according to referee Joey Kooij, the attacker had committed a foul before tapping the ball behind Yanick van Osch.
Immediately afterwards Gladon had a big chance, but the Emmen attacker was a few shoe sizes short to slide into the sharp cross of Luka Adzic.
Penalty kick and red
Five minutes after the break, Emmen took the lead via a penalty kick. Referee Kooij immediately gave red to Fortuna defender Roel Janssen because he caught Gladon in the penalty area. Gladon went against the grass, after which Peña fired in the 0-1 from the penalty spot.
