Europe wants to become more powerful in the chip industry, is that feasible?

“I think it is very good that as Europe you want to invest more in the chip industry”, says one of the insiders. “But you have to invest in what you are good at, then you can make a difference as a European company.”

Reference is made to, for example, chips for the car industry and the Internet of Things; think of smart speakers, doorbell or smoke detector. These are made by, for example, the Dutch NXP and the German companies Bosch and Infineon.

That comment is also heard from the European Parliament. According to CDA MEP Tom Berendsen, the EU should become less dependent on the US and Asia, but it is also important to look at what the existing chip industry is good at.

“The question is: where do we have strength in the chain, then invest in it”, says Berendsen. “Other parts of the world are then dependent on us. It is important to have a balance of power.”

A number of Dutch companies are also important within the European chip industry, such as chip machine maker ASML in Veldhoven:
