The 31-year-old Everton footballer who was arrested on suspicion of sexual harassment of a minor, is now living in a safehouse. This is reported by English and Icelandic media.
Because the investigation is ongoing, his name has not yet been officially released, but Icelandic media have now confirmed that it concerns 78-time international Gylfi Sigurdsson. For legal reasons, that name is not mentioned in English media.
Everton itself confirmed that it has suspended a player from the A-selection. “Everton can confirm that it has suspended a first-team player pending a police investigation. We are cooperating with the authorities and will not comment further.” The Icelandic Football Association has also declined to comment on the matter.
Sigurdsson is said to have been arrested in Manchester on Friday evening on suspicion of sexual harassment of a minor. The fact that the Icelandic international was missing in the practice match against Blackburn Rovers and that his wife Alexandra Ivarsdottir promptly deleted her Instagram account only reinforced the rumours.
The Icelander, who has denied everything, has been housed in a safehouse, according to Icelandic and English media, which is made available by Everton pending the results of the investigation.
Sigurdsson has been playing for Everton since 2017, which paid more than 49 million to Swansea for him.
