Everything you need to know about the European Championship darts with Michael van Gerwen and Danny Noppert | darts

The European Championship darts starts tonight in front of a well-filled Salzburgarena in Austria. On behalf of the Netherlands, Michael van Gerwen and Danny Noppert participate in the prize pool of 590,000 euros. Several well-known names, including Dirk van Duijvenbode, are missing from the playing field due to a unique qualification.

The European Championship Darts, or European Championship darts, is one of the major tournaments of the year. The 32 players who collected the most prize money during this year’s European Tour have qualified. The PDC Order of Merit, where Van Gerwen is third, does not count. He is now qualified eighth.

Due to the pandemic, instead of thirteen EuroTour tournaments, only two have been completed: the Hungarian Darts Trophy and Gibraltar Darts Trophy. Players who participated in both events have an advantage, while other top players miss out on a spot at the European Championship. In addition to Dirk van Duijvenbode, Dimitri Van den Bergh, Dave Chisnall, Jonny Clayton and Stephen Bunting are also missing.

Contrary to what the name suggests, players from outside Europe can also participate. Peter Wright is at the start as defending champion, he defeated James Wade in the final last year. ,,Last year it was a great tournament for me,’ said Wright. ,,I averaged over 100 over the whole tournament. Florian (Hempel, ed.) is already difficult.”

Match schedule

The tournament is played via a standard knockout system. Van Gerwen and Noppert can meet in the semi-final at the earliest. Despite the fact that Noppert is in shape, that chance seems small.

Van Gerwen takes on 42-year-old Croatian Boris Krcmar in the first game. For the Brabander, the most difficult match already awaits in the quarterfinals. If all goes well, he will meet the first placed Price.

Noppert is placed twentieth and immediately has to deal with a difficult opponent: Krzysztof Ratajski. The Pole beat Rob Cross and Nathan Aspinall last week, and is seeded 13th for the tournament. To qualify for a hypothetical semi-final against Van Gerwen, he will have to defeat fifth-seeded Briton Aspinall (or his conqueror).
