A Delta Air Lines plane landed on the runway at Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport early Thursday morning in strong winds and stopped short of the runway, the Dutch safety commission said.

OVV is currently investigating what went wrong.

A spokesman for Schiphol said the rear of an Airbus A330-300 landed just before the hard surface of the Austbahn, rendering the runway non-functional for several hours while track lighting repairs were carried out. The incident also caused some flights to be delayed.

Planes coming from Detroit could taxi to the gate where passengers disembarked.

But the next flight to Boston was first delayed and later canceled. Passengers told Dutch News they had been at the airport for hours without being given any information about new flights or accommodations.

The Austbahn runway is the shortest runway at Schiphol Airport and is not used on a daily basis. However, it is used in strong winds.
