Feyenoord beat Volendam’s resistance to maintain three-point margin

Feyenoord survived Volendam’s scare over Butler to maintain a three-point lead over Ajax ahead of next weekend’s table-of-the-table clash in Amsterdam.

Volendam took the lead at Kuip when Darryl van Miegem stole a march in the Feyenoord defense and slipped the ball into the net after 12 minutes.

Feyenoord manager Arie Slott made three substitutions at half-time, with Rutscharel Geertruida holding off three defenders and laying off the ball before Santiago Jiménez equalized.

Volendam held on until the 76th minute when Damon Milani turned a cross into his own goal.

Feyenoord will face Shakhtar Donetsk in the conference league on Thursday before heading to the Johan Cruyff Arena on Sunday for a chance to open up a 6-point lead over their rivals.

The Go Ahead Eagles’ Friday night game against RKC Waalwijk has been postponed due to heavy snowfall in Deventer.
