With feelings of resignation, the Friends of Amstel Live watched Prime Minister Rutte’s press conference tonight: the sharp edges of the hard lockdown are disappearing, but the cultural sector remains the major victim. None of the fourteen concerts in Ahoy will take place: the total of 150,000 fans who would attend an evening will get their money back.
“They have the first right to buy a new ticket again,” says Machiel Hofman of organizer Tribe Company. Preparations for the 24th edition of the Vrienden van Amstel Live started almost eleven months ago.
Construction started two weeks ago and this week musicians such as Miss Montreal, Roel van Velzen, Diggy Dex and Typhoon rehearsed in the sports palace to be there tomorrow – against their better judgement. Canceling was not an option because the guarantee fund only pays out if the government – and not the organization – pulls the plug. “There is resignation, but also anger and sadness. We also have to move on. We need to get some perspective now. I understand the explanation that we have to hold on for a while, but our business has never been open. Never as it should. It’s time that we were not only mentioned more often, but that something happened. Words must be turned into deeds,” said Hofman, who is working with the organization on a mini-doc that may be online this evening.
The short film on YouTube shows what the Friends of Amstel Live have been through in recent weeks. “A moving film, on which people can see and feel what we have experienced. We filmed everything that happened up close. The construction, the reactions of the artists, the organization. The events, the emotions. Definitely worth it if you are somewhat interested in our sector.”
