Two of the five clubs that started this European week are through. PSV and Feyenoord qualified for the quarter-finals of the Conference League. In fact, PSV is the only team in the Netherlands that is still active on three fronts. Etienne Verhoeff talks to Maarten Wijffels about the matches in Europe and the Classic in a new AD Voetbalpodcast.
Feyenoord won quite easily at home from Partizan Belgrade and PSV had no problems in Denmark with FC Copenhagen. Was this the best match of the Eindhoven team under Schimidt? ,,It was good against Ajax for the Johan Cruijff Scale. The match Vitesse-away (0-5), there was a lot in it. But this also looked good”, Wijffels analyzes. ,,I am very curious whether PSV now has a freshness in the final phase of the season because so many changes have been made by Schmidt. That is often the story with teams in this phase. Just think of Rutten’s teams that collapse in the second half of the competition.”
Feyenoord and PSV can meet in the quarterfinals. “I would like that. Then you also at least have a Dutch club in the semi-finals. But of course they can also meet in the final for me.”
AZ and Vitesse both played a draw and were eliminated. AZ after extra time. And Vitesse in the last minute. “That Whitek. Last minute. Vitesse is 0-1 ahead. And then you let yourself be knocked at the far post as left back. You didn’t see that at Benfica on Tuesday. But at a Dutch club a left back thinks ‘it can be a while’. Wittek is Vitesse’s player in an offensive sense, but you really can’t be fooled like that in the last minute.”
Further attention to the Classic. Hofland’s first match at Willem II and the battle for the title.
