Former Haarlem prison transformed into higher education institution

Haarlem’s former Koper prison has officially been given new life. The monumental building now serves as the educational hub for the Haarlem campus, which will welcome its first students next week. NH News report.

Haarlem Campus is a private post-secondary institution offering 3 Bachelor’s and 1 Master’s programs. It is planned to eventually become a full-fledged university college.

Plans to transform the former prison into a place of learning began in 2016. After several years of work, its doors opened earlier this year. And on Friday, the first students toured the new school. “It’s beautiful. I knew it was a prison before I came here, but when I went inside, I was really surprised. It’s very impressive.

Another called it “genius” that the prison cell now serves as a small study. Students come from 27 countries, including several from the North Holland region itself.
