Ronald Koeman has had a few hectic months. Cup win with Barcelona. No national title. Is Barcelona coach? No Barcelona coach? He now knows that he will also be on the bench at the Catalan club next season.
This week Koeman is in the Netherlands. On Tuesday evening, together with his brother Erwin, he unveiled a statue of their father Martin. The statue stands in front of the FC Groningen stadium, which celebrates its 50th anniversary today.
Koeman also looked at the Orange squad, which defeated Ukraine 3-2 on Sunday. Where there was universally positive response to the victory, Koeman, who exchanged the Dutch national team for Barcelona in August last year, is more critical of reporter Kees Jongkind. “People are very positive. That surprises me. I didn’t see it that positively… I liked the second half, but it’s only 3-2. And Ukraine is not a country that will go very far.”
“I think the Netherlands can go far, but then things will definitely have to be better. I saw France-Germany yesterday. That was a few levels higher. But… the Dutch team can do that. But that has to improve. Let’s hope they get very far.”
