From ‘Huisje Veghel’ to Lithuania: Olivier Rommens throws himself into the battle for European football | TOP Oss

Former TOP Oss midfielder Olivier Rommens wants to fulfill his ambitions at FK Sūduva in Lithuania. “They play European, that made it interesting to see.”

Fanatic basketball fans may know Marijampolė, home of FK Sūduva, as the birthplace of professional player Darius Songaila, now an assistant coach in the NBA with the San Antonio Spurs. For football-loving Europe, however, Lithuania’s sixth largest city is quite a blind spot.

But Olivier Rommens hopes to be able to change that in the coming years. The ex-player of TOP Oss (and before that of Jong PSV and NAC) signed a contract last week until the end of 2023 with FK Sūduva, the current number two in the Lithuanian Eredivisie.’

Top Club in Lithuania

“They are here halfway through the season and were looking for a player to strengthen the midfield,” says the 26-year-old Belgian. He himself was not familiar with football in Lithuania. Rommens was therefore not immediately sure when he heard of the interest there was in him. ,,But it is one of the top clubs in the country. They also play European, so that makes it interesting for me to see what the club looks like.”

And so it happened. Rommens was immediately pleased with the accommodations, the stadiums and the excellent fields he encountered. Moreover, it is an ambitious club that has a fairly international orientation, with the Spanish head coach Víctor Basadre at the helm, and a good number of foreign players among the ranks. “If you’re only with guys from here, it’s more difficult because of the language,” says Rommens. “But I can make myself understood in Spanish and in French, and the working language here is English.”

More importantly, he felt at home with the club’s playing style. “They are physically very fit players, and the team wants to play in possession a lot.” That fits with the temperamental way in which Rommens usually stands in the field.

UEFA Conference League

,,It is a step that I really couldn’t pass up”, says Rommens, who was welcome to extend his contract in Oss. However, he chose to join a selection that is in the middle of the battle for the league title, and in a week and a half will compete with Latvian Valmiera for a place in the UEFA Conference League. ,,I hope to be able to play some nice matches soon.”

This marks the end of his years in ‘Huisje Veghel’, the house where TOP Oss offers accommodation to players from outside the region. Olivier lived there with his younger brother Philippe, who made a move to Go Ahead Eagles earlier this summer.

,,We have learned a lot from each other, but now it was also time to go our own way. And flying you’ll be back together in two hours; it is not the end of the world.”
