About 9,500 new homes were built last year, repurposed from former offices, stores and other commercial properties, according to the National Bureau of Statistics’ CBS.

That number is down from peaks in 2021 and 2020, with conversion adding nearly 12,500 units to the housing stock, according to CBS.

In total, just over 80,000 new homes were built last year, well below the government’s current target of 100,000.

Initial estimates also suggest that conversions added 4,500 homes to the national housing stock in the first six months of 2022.

One-eighth of the properties converted in 2021 will be in Amsterdam, followed by Groningen, Rotterdam and The Hague.
