The price for gas on the Amsterdam gas exchange, which is a benchmark for European prices, fell by almost 15 percent on Thursday to about 90 euros per megawatt hour. An analyst points out that energy demand has fallen as trading slowed over the long Easter weekend.
After the Russian invasion of Ukraine and subsequent Western sanctions against Russia, gas prices had soared. Russian President Vladimir Putin has previously demanded that gas be paid in rubles. The European Union has warned member states that this violates sanctions imposed on Moscow. The European countries are dependent on Russian gas, but want to quickly reduce that dependence.
