Gas station manager fired after accidentally selling petrol for 17 cents a liter | Car

Riots nearly broke out at a California gas station last week after a gas station manager accidentally entered the wrong price per gallon. This allowed customers to refuel their cars for an amount ten times lower than the actual price.

A queue soon formed at the pump as surprised customers called their friends and relatives to inform them that the gas station in question was only charging 69 cents a gallon, according to the report. The Washington Post. That was because manager John Szczecina had made a mistake when entering the price. It cost the gas station in Rancho Cordova, California, which he ran, about $20,000 in sales.

‘Honest mistake’

According to Szczecina, it was ‘truly a mistake’. The pump manager only learned about the circus that had taken place at the pump when he arrived for his shift the next morning. By then it was already too late. Shortly afterwards, he was fired.

Since then, he has been trying to repay his former employer. Since his story went viral, donations have been pouring in through a fundraiser set up by his family. By Thursday, the campaign had already raised more than $13,000. “It’s my fault,” he said. “I think it’s important to admit my mistake and do everything I can to make it right.”

Manager wants to compensate the damage

Szczecina said he received an email on June 9 telling him to change the price of gasoline to $6.99 a gallon. It was the third report of a price increase he had received that week. On the morning of June 9, he typed “699” into his computer three times to set the new price. This resulted in 0.699 on the plates, which is about 17 cents per litre.

His sister, Paula Jackson, who ran the campaign, said Szczecina’s attitude shows “the goodness of his heart.” “He doesn’t have to pay it back,” Jackson said. “But just the fact that he wants to do it shows a lot of character, honesty and responsibility, and I’m really proud of that.”
