At the end of July, the journalist made a report in the hard-hit Bad Münstereifel in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. Susanne Ohlen talked about the suffering of the local population in her report and called on the public to also lend a hand after the disaster. However, someone filmed how the journalist smeared herself with mud before she got on the TV.
The images ended up on YouTube and social media. The video showed Ohlen bending down in front of colleagues, dipping her hands in the mud and smearing herself with the stinky stuff. After the video came to light, the German channel RTL sent the journalist on leave.
Ohlen, who has been with the station since 2008, apologized a few days later via a message on Instagram: “I made a serious mistake in the disaster area (…) After helping in the affected region the previous days , I afterwards – without consultation – smeared mud on my clothes. That should not have happened.”
