Giakoumakis from VVV threatens to become the first top scorer in the premier division to be relegated

Due to the 2-1 defeat at PEC Zwolle, the team from Venlo dropped to sixteenth place, culminating in the after-competition at the end of the season. Giakoumakis also couldn’t change that on Sunday, although he missed an imposed header opportunity before half time. The team of new coach Jos Luhukay as the successor to the dismissed Hans de Koning was dear to pay.

Until this season, the top scorer of the premier league never finished lower than eleventh place in the rankings. In the 1958-1959 season, NAC leaned on Leo Canjels’ goals. Ten years ago, the Belgian Björn Vleminckx was suddenly the celebrated man at NEC as an unrecognized goal scorer. In any case, Giakoumakis will break the record of the lowest ranked top scorer.

After the loss to PEC, he has no desire to speak to the press. Via the press secretary of VVV, he let it be known that he is not interested in interviews. Too disappointed as he is about his own performance and the eighth loss in a row for VVV. “It’s frustrating to have the top scorer on your team and still have to fight relegation,” said defender Christian Kum.

Giakoumakis is by far the most scoring player in the premier league. So far he has scored nine goals more than AZ midfielder Teun Koopmeiners and the attackers Steven Berghuis (Feyenoord) and Donyell Malen (PSV). Kum: ‘We should be very happy with Georgios. Without him things would probably have looked a lot worse for us. ‘

Goal production

Giakoumakis is the cork on which VVV floats this season. The 26-year-old striker made 62 percent of VVV’s 39 goals. Only Frans Rutten, as Roda JC striker, had a larger share in the goal production in the 1961-1962 season. He made 71 percent of the hits, according to figures from statistics agency Opta Sports.

Giakoumakis’ goal drive is as surprising as it is striking. Until this season, the striker had a fairly anonymous life for someone who lives on goals. In just one season, he managed to score more than three goals. He made eleven hits with the Greek mid-engine Platanias. Last season he came as a mercenary with the Polish Górnik Zabrze no further than three goals.

Nevertheless, technical director Stan Valckx of VVV was immediately enthusiastic when he saw video images of the physically impressive striker. In addition to a strong body, he has power and depth in his game. Valckx traveled to Poland, although he had to watch Giakoumakis’ match on television in a cafe, because he was not allowed to enter the stadium due to the corona measures. A day later, both parties came together.

“No one had ever heard of him when he came to us in the summer,” says Kum. ‘In the preparation it was a bit of a wait and see how good he would be. But from the first competition match it started to run and everything flew in. ‘ Giakoumakis scored four times in one match against Vitesse and ADO. Only Luis Suárez succeeded this century as Ajax attacker in the 2009-2010 season.

Lurking for opportunity

Giakoumakis is not the type of striker who makes the rest of the team play better football. He is the finisher par excellence, patiently waiting for his chance in front of the goal. It is not without reason that he only gave one assist this season, scoring 22 of his 24 goals within the penalty area. Kum: “I have never before experienced a striker who is so focused on scoring goals.”

Giakoumakis also appeals to the imagination internationally this season. In the five major European competitions, only Robert Lewandowski was more accurate than the VVV attacker. The Bayern Munich striker scored 35 times. Among others, Cristiano Ronaldo (23) and Erling Haaland (21) scored fewer goals than Giakoumakis.

If VVV still wants to escape relegation, it depends on the goal production of its striker. “He knows that himself,” says Kum. ‘If we keep the zero in the back, he will take care of the goals in the front. That is a bit of our interaction. ‘

In the two games that Giakoumakis did not participate, VVV was unable to score. Isn’t it dangerous to be so dependent on a player? Kum: ‘VVV is not an Ajax that can bring in three substitutes, all of which can easily score a goal. Above all, we should be very happy with Georgios. But it is true that the contrast between a top scorer and having to fight against relegation is very big. ‘
