Giovanni van Bronckhorst with Rangers down at the Belgian stunt team | Sport

The main draw of the Champions League is far away for Rangers FC. The team of Dutch coach Giovanni van Bronckhorst lost the first match against Union from Belgium in the third preliminary round on Tuesday. It became 2-0.

The return in Scotland is next week. The winner will meet PSV or AS Monaco in the play-offs, in which a ticket for the group stage can be earned. Monaco against PSV ended in a draw (1-1) in France on Tuesday.

Union, the surprising number 2 of last season in Belgium, took the lead after half an hour of play via captain Teddy Teuma. Dante Vanzeir doubled the lead by using a penalty fifteen minutes before the end. The Dutch defender Bart Nieuwkoop played the entire game at Union. Oussama El Azzouzi, who was taken over from FC Emmen last weekend, remained on the reserve bench.

Van Bronckhorst reached the final of the Europa League with the Rangers last season. Eintracht Frankfurt was too strong after penalties

Schmidt well on his way with Benfica

Roger Schmidt is almost certain of a place in the play-offs of the Champions League with Benfica. The German trainer, who had PSV under his wing for the previous two seasons, saw his team win 4-1 against FC Midtjylland on Tuesday. The return in Denmark will follow next week.

Attacker Goncalo Ramos played the leading role with three goals at Benfica, where former Brazilian Ajax player David Neres had a base place and was substituted shortly before time. The final score had already been reached by then. The Belgian Jan Vertonghen, also a former Ajax player, remained on the bench. In the play-offs, Benfica of Midtjylland will face Ukraine’s Dinamo Kiev or Austrian club Sturm Graz. The first meeting between those two clubs is Wednesday.

Benfica reached the main draw of the Champions League last season by beating PSV in the play-offs. In the eighth finals, the Portuguese were then too strong for Ajax.
