About one in three primary schools in Gelderland has realized a green schoolyard in the past three years, with support from the province. The schools placed more trees and shrubs. This is reported by the Province of Gelderland.
Provincial deputy Peter Drenth: “What could be more fun than a schoolyard with trees to climb and bushes to hide in. Schools now also have the opportunity to teach more outside.” Greens schoolyards, however, have even more to offer. They have more space for birds and insects, they reduce heat stress and flooding.
Children’s health and well-being
Most important of all, green schoolyards are nicer places to play and learn. In doing so, they also contribute to the health and well-being of the children.
The Province of Gelderland allocated a total of 5.1 million euros for schoolyards with more greenery on them. The money has not yet run out, there is still 440,000 euros available until the end of the year. 25 schools in the province could therefore still apply for a subsidy. The subsidy scheme will end at the end of this year.
