It’s time again to encourage organizations, businesses, schools and individuals across the Northern states to take action to reduce waste.
Groningen this year Week Fun Het Afvar (“Waste Reduction Week”) runs from October 29th to November 4th. Please join us.
The theme for 2022 is “Reduce, Recycle, Repair”. You can focus on:
- Reducing single-use items (including plastic bags and some products that appear to replace them)
- Raise awareness about waste, especially plastic and e-waste
- Repair old items and give them new life

Alderman for the Circular Economy Kirsten de Reed will kick off Waste Reduction Week at the Forum’s Repair Cafe on October 29 at noon. Four similar cafes will open at the same time in various parts of Hokkaido. Everyone is welcome, with or without broken appliances, clothing, bikes, or other items. On the same afternoon at Vismarkt he will also hold a contest to see who builds the most beautiful bike out of five bicycle accidents.
A zero-waste pioneer of lean living
Emily-Jane Townley, zero waste pioneer and steadfast champion, will be speaking in Groningen on Tuesday, November 1st. In 2013, Ms. Townley made the decision to radically change her life. Over the years, she discovered through her trial and error that living lean is difficult but not impossible.Ms. Townley is a delightful speaker and a source of inspiration for many. is. Her presentation will begin at 7:30 pm at the forum her Labozart in Groningen. Then there will be a question and answer session with Mirjam Wijnja, Municipal Councilor for City Management. Admission is free.
