Beach volleyball players Katja Stam and Raïsa Schoon surprisingly won the first edition of the Elite 16 tournament. In the Mexican Rosarito, the Dutch couple defeated Anastasija Kravcenoka and Tina Graudina from Latvia in the final in two sets: 21-14, 21-13.
Stam and Schoon were placed thirteenth at the tournament in Rosarito, their opponents from Latvia were ranked seventh. In the sand, however, the balance of power was different.
It went evenly until 3-3, but then the Dutch, who had qualified for the main schedule through the qualifying tournament, slowly but surely built up a significant lead. That lead was no longer relinquished and the first set went to Stam and Schoon with 21-14.
The second set followed the same course and on 20-12 the Dutch duo got the first chance to decide the match. That didn’t work on his own service, but at the second match point it was hit.
The 23-year-old Stam and the 20-year-old Schoon have been playing together since the summer of 2020 and they needed little time to get used to each other. Less than a year after their first tournament, they already qualified for the Olympic Games. In Tokyo they survived the group stage, but were eliminated in the intermediate round.
Shortly after the Games, the Dutch couple was in top form and the silver medal was won at the European Championships. They also had top form last week at the Challenge tournament (the second level of the FIVB Beach Pro Tour) in Tlaxcala, Mexico. Stam and Schoon then also reached the final, but lost in the final battle to the Brazilian duo Barbara/Carol.
Brouwer/Meeuwsen down in final
There was no Dutch winner at the men’s tournament in Rosarito. Alexander Brouwer and Robert Meeuwsen lost in the final 21-17, 21-15 to the Qatari duo Cherif Younousse/Ahmed Tijan.
Cherif and Ahmed are the numbers one in the world, but the last mutual meeting (October 2021) was won by the Dutch world champions of 2013. This time, Brouwer and Meeuwsen were by far the lesser. In the first set they managed to keep up, but in set two the difference was quickly made.
