Harvey Weinstein has officially pleaded innocence at the start of a new trial of 11 charges of rape and sexual abuse. That happened today during a hearing in Los Angeles, where the former Hollywood film producer appeared in a wheelchair.
Weinstein, 69, was extradited to the US state of California yesterday for a new trial. He was previously sentenced to 23 years in New York for similar offenses. If Weinstein is convicted again, he will spend the rest of his life in prison. Due to his ill health, he had challenged extradition.
Weinstein let his lawyers speak for him but spoke once anyway. He thanked the judge after wishing him good luck. Weinstein’s attorneys had filed a motion to dismiss three charges because they were said to be time-barred.
The film producer, who previously denied everything, is accused in California of raping and assaulting five women. The incidents took place between 2004 and 2013. The case continues on July 29.
