The father and son team Marcel and Dorus Steeman decided that humble bikes were more remarkable and set out to design their own LEGO kits that would allow users to build mini bike lanes.
It seems they are not the only bike fans. Earlier this month, LEGO received the 10,000 votes needed to consider it as a future building set.
LEGO Ideas Community: Bicycle lanes
Nowadays, you can create almost anything with LEGO. From iconic sets of popular movies and TV shows to ultra-detailed models of your car, such as a VW camper. And thanks to the user-created LEGO Ideas community, fans can submit their designs and ideas to future building sets.
Marcel and Dorus did just that when they submitted their plans for a LEGO bike lane in January. Their purpose was to incorporate it into Lego City to develop a bike-friendly set.
“With the new sets 60304 (Road Plate) and 60306 (Shopping Street) … with buildable and adjustable roads, bikes and even cargo bikes, it’s time to add to the next step in mobility. I’m here. It’s a bike lane that’s wide enough to ride safely and wide enough for a cargo bike, “Marcel wrote in the project description.
Dutch father and son team find support for LEGO bike car ideas
This plan was very popular and quickly exceeded all the goals set by LEGO. Then, on May 2, Marcel and Dorus were able to reach their most important milestone, 10.000 votes. This means that the design will be officially passed to LEGO for review. There, a team of designers and product managers find out if the idea meets LEGO standards.
The review phase begins in May, but it can take up to several months to reach the final decision. When the green light comes out of Lego, the bike crane project is in the development stage.
