The Dutch hockey players have reached the final of the European championship. In the Wagener Stadium of Amstelveen, the formation of national coach Alyson Annan won in the semi-final of Belgium, 3-1.
The Orange goals came in the name of Frédérique Matla, Felice Albers and Caia van Maasakker (penalty corner). The Belgian goal came from Stéphane Vanden Borre. She made the 2-1 from a penalty shot. Prior to the semifinals, the Netherlands had won all group matches with large numbers.
After the Belgian goal, a difficult phase started for the Netherlands for the first time in this tournament. The Belgian Ambre Ballenghien was even close to the equalizer.
“The relief is great,” Albers said to the NOS afterwards. ,,We started well, but especially in the first phase after the break it was all a bit less. We were too sloppy and didn’t defend smartly. As the Netherlands, that should not happen to us. We know what to improve in the final. But now we are going 100 percent for gold.”
The recovery came in the fourth quarter, in which the Netherlands was aggressive from the start and soon had opportunities. ,,In that phase we were convincing again”, said Albers. There were opportunities for Laurien Leurink and Marloes Keetels, among others, before Van Maasakker decided the game by placing the ball high in the goal from a penalty corner.
Belgian national coach Raoul Ehren nevertheless said that he enjoyed his team’s game. ,,After the 2-1, I think the equalizer was even in the air. Unfortunately it did not come. We just haven’t made it against the Netherlands yet, but our performance gives us a lot of confidence for the future. With this young team we have proven that we really belong.”
The men qualified for the final a day earlier, beating Belgium after shoot-outs.
