Hoekstra: The Dutch spend billions saved like this | Financial

A large part of the money that the Dutch have hoarded through the lockdowns is thus put back into the economy. That is what Minister Wopke Hoekstra of Finance expects.

De Nederlandsche Bank (DNB) reported on Friday that the Dutch saved 42 billion euros last year, twice as much as the year before.

With that money, many Dutch people are ‘eager’ to dive into the pub or go shopping, the treasurer expects. “And you see with the enormous amount of money that the Dutch have saved, that it is very likely that people will want to spend it again.”

This will also give a boost to the economy, which will be ‘kick-started’ in this way, Hoekstra thinks. He says it is important that people “organize their finances wisely and also make sure they pay off debts.”

But after a year of saving, according to the minister, it is also logical that “many people cannot wait to resume normal life” and just make the cut.
