I am 100% positive about my internship in Groningen – Hanse International Students – Northern Times

Made It in The North: Barnabas Rohr

What made you come to Holland?

Good question! I was checking different places I could go to and it ended up being pretty random. However, due to the influence of the people around me, I decided to go to Holland.

What do you like most about this country?

I lived mainly in Groningen and I think everyone is happy, especially compared to Hungary. I would recommend Groningen for students.

Was the work culture here what you expected?

It was similar to what I expected, but it has a nice outside feel and an atmosphere that fits the culture of the country. If you compare the working culture with Hungary, it can be said that it is quite different. One is not necessarily bad, but they are different.

What was the most difficult part of moving to your new location?

nothing!

do you speak dutch?

No. I can understand certain things, but I can’t speak. Everyone speaks English in Groningen. For the first few years, I didn’t even realize I was speaking so much English.

What is the content of the internship?

Connected to mechanical engineering.I am studying for an internship at the Hanze University of Applied Sciences ACS Building We are looking for solutions to improve the energy efficiency of our buildings. Coincidentally, it’s my university building. There is nothing I dislike about my internship at ACS. I am 100% positive about it.

Can I juggle an internship and study?

I am currently studying and will complete my bachelor’s degree in about a year and a half. This is a full-time internship, so you don’t have to do anything else. It just works, so it’s not hard and it’s doable.

Do you plan to work in the Netherlands after graduation?

I would like to get some work experience here before I move from Holland, but I don’t think I will be here for long.

How can I set myself apart when applying for an internship in Groningen?

If you have a particular hobby related to your studies, your boss likes it. And if you can talk about it, they will see how motivated you are about it. It shows what you are thinking. I think this will be very helpful.

Do you have any other tips for other internationals who want to do an internship here?

For me, as with engineering, I think it’s relatively easy to find internships without speaking Dutch. There is a shortage of engineering personnel. So I think it’s definitely easier than in many other areas. But be sure to look up information on the internet about how it all works. Because if you’ve just left your home country, you’re used to those rules. So we have to see how it is done here for preparation.
