Ikea has opened its largest store in the world near the Philippine capital Manila. In the large shopping center Mall of Asia, the branch occupies an area of approximately 65,000 square meters. That is equivalent to about ten football fields.
The shop is five stories high and sells more than 8,000 products. Ikea expects to receive about 20,000 visitors per day. The layout of the store is similar to the smaller Dutch stores; showrooms to view the furniture and a department store where you can get the loose parts of the furniture to screw together yourself later.
The arrival of this first Ikea in the Philippines was already announced in 2018. The store should have been ready last year, but the corona pandemic threw a spanner in the works. There was also a disruption in the supply of the building material, which further delayed the opening of the store.
The store immediately attracts many guests. Due to the corona measures in the Philippines, shoppers have to make a reservation to visit Ikea, and many Filipinos have already done so. The booking system is already full for the next two weeks.
Ikea is investing heavily in expansion. The Swedish furniture group is not only looking at growth opportunities in Asia. In the spring, the first South American store will open in Santiago, Chile. Ikea currently has more than 460 stores worldwide. The intention is that in the current financial year, which will run until the summer of next year, nearly sixty more branches will be added.
