The Tokyo Olympics were watched by more than three billion people worldwide last summer. According to the International Olympic Committee (IOC), this involved 3.05 billion unique viewers on television and digital platforms.

Compared to the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro in 2016, there was a 33 percent increase in television coverage, while digital production increased by 34 percent, the IOC said.

“The Tokyo 2020 Games marked a turning point in the history of Olympic broadcasting by bringing sports fans more content than ever before on an unprecedented number of screens, whether through TV, digital, websites, apps or social media,” the IOC said. “By leveraging new technologies and digital innovations, more sports fans are interacting with the Games, making the Tokyo 2020 Games the most inclusive Olympic Games ever.”
