Olympian Jack Woolley (22) was one of the victims of senseless violence during a night out this weekend. The Irish taekwondoka received a serious blow in the face and was taken to the hospital bleeding profusely, he says.
What should have been a quiet night out with a friend has turned into a nightmare for Jack Woolley. The Olympian ended up in Dublin hospital on Friday night. He shares his story on Instagram, accompanied by some horrifying photos that are not suitable for people with a sensitive stomach.
,,Last Friday I went to eat something with a friend, after which we went for a drink. As we returned along the River Liffey, a group of about eight to twelve twenty-somethings, both men and women, began attacking people. Unfortunately I was one of the victims. When I walked by, I got a slap in the face. One blow, followed by ‘my fault, wrong person’, then they went on and beat up other innocent people.”
In the fierce photos that Woolley shares on Instagram, you can see how he is bleeding heavily on the floor. The incidents took place just after midnight. Just hours before that, Woolley was still training.
“Luckily I was able to call an ambulance and regain consciousness,” he continues. “My friends helped me and I’m glad they were both unharmed. A lot of people have been taken away and I have heard that even one person has died after being stabbed. I am currently in the hospital waiting for an operation on my mouth. Thanks for all the support and messages.”
The nurses provided first aid to the Olympian’s face and plastic surgery will follow later. No one has been arrested yet, but the investigation against the gang is ongoing.
The Olympics were a disappointment for Woolley, by the way. The number eight in the world was already eliminated in the first round in the category up to 58 kilos by his Argentine opponent Lucas Guzman. Woolley was the first Irishman ever to represent his country in taekwondo at the Games.
