Italian former Prime Minister Matteo Renzi received an envelope with two bullets in it on Wednesday, his party Italia Viva reports. The envelope, reportedly without a written letter inside, was delivered to the Senate in Rome, of which Renzi is a member.
The threat has been condemned by both left and right-wing politicians. “We will not be intimidated,” said Deputy Minister Teresa Bellanova of Italia Viva.
Renzi (prime minister from early 2014 to late 2016) was responsible for the fall of the government at the beginning of this year due to disagreements about how to spend the billions from the European recovery fund.
He is one of the least popular politicians in Italy and has been widely criticized for his action to overthrow Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte’s government coalition.
The small party Italia Viva has joined the new government led by former president of the European Central Bank Mario Draghi.
