Jakobsen has finished the first ride: ‘Today nothing could destroy my day’

There was no such tension in the run-up to his first race since his terrible crash. Jakobsen gets the space from his team Deceuninck-QuickStep to get used to it calmly. “I know I don’t have to sprint here. If I feel good enough I can indicate that, but for the time being I just lie down at night with two eyes closed.”

Participating for a stage win is also not yet possible. For that, Jakobsen needs a few more race kilometers. “Especially towards the final I notice that I am out of breath and my legs fill up sooner. I didn’t think about it today, but maybe I’ll secretly think about it in the coming days.”

Wave to the home front

On the way he got plenty of attention from other riders, who wanted to have a chat with him. “They all say about the same, that they really like that I am here. Some also say that it inspires them.” The cameraman also managed to find Jakobsen. “I did wave for the home front once.”

“I’ve had a lot of messages. I try to respond to everyone. That doesn’t always work, because I also have to focus on the race”, says the grateful Jakobsen. “Hopefully it will be a little less in the coming days. The cameraman will look for me again and then I will certainly wave again.”
