Disc jockey Jan van Veen will soon be releasing a new podcast. The 76-year-old radio maker will present a digital youth version of his iconic program every week from October 17th candlelight.
In the podcast, Van Veen will read poems by, for and by children aged 10 to 15 for an hour every week. The contributions are found in collaboration with the School of Poetry in Amsterdam and the Faculty of Literature at Utrecht University, among other things. Young people can also send in their epistles via the Candlelight Kids website.
According to the poet Van Veen, making poems among children has never been so popular. “You see that the zeitgeist greatly inspires children to write down their deepest emotions,” he said in a statement. “Feelings of fear, doubt, hope and love, which they sometimes cannot verbally express at that age, are beautifully described on paper. Through our website we receive gems of poetry every day.”
candlelight was last heard on public radio in 2019, at Omroep Max. However, the collaboration was terminated when the presenter and the broadcaster had ‘a difference of opinion about the content of the program’. Van Veen has also presented the program on Radio Veronica, Radio 3, Sky Radio, 100% NL and RTV Utrecht in the past half century.
