“When I made those jokes, I honestly thought they were innocent,” said the talk show host. Leno went on to say that too often he felt that “people should check it out if they can’t take a joke,” even when he knew in his heart that it was wrong.
“I hereby apologize. I don’t see this particular case as another example of cancel culture but as a legitimate mistake I made, ”said 70-year-old Leno. According to him, the action group has accepted his apologies ‘courteously’. “I hope the Asian-American community can accept that too, and I hope I can live up to their expectations in the future.”
The apologies come at a time when racism against people of Asian descent is in the spotlight. In three shooting incidents in Atlanta, eight people were shot last week, most of them of Asian descent. On Sunday, thousands of Americans took to the streets to protest anti-Asian racism.
