Jeffrey Herlings convincingly takes pole for MXGP of Russia | Regional sports

Jeffrey Herlings will be the first to the starting gate this afternoon when the opening round of the World Motocross Championship takes place. The Bullet defeated world champion Tim Gajser and Romain Febvre for pole. Roan van de Moosdijk from Eindhoven was second in the MX2 World Championship in the opening session of the season.

Herlings initially seemed to have trouble with the tricky Russian track, which is not on the favorites list for any of the pilots. The KTM rider fell on his first fast lap, with his bike also receiving minor cosmetic damage. In the final phase of the qualifying session, however, he turned the switch.

Although the rider from Oploo never looked really comfortable, he still raced to the fastest time in his characteristic powerful style, three tenths ahead of nearest competitor Tim Gajser. Romain Febvre and Jorge Prado also joined. Glenn Coldenhoff finished ninth. Calvin Vlaanderen finished in twelfth place. Eindhoven player Brian Bogers misses the game in Russia due to an arm injury.

Just short of MX2 pole for Van de Moosdijk

Also in the MX2 class, the best time seemed to go to a Dutchman for a long time. Roan van de Moosdijk looked very fast on the hard track, where his strength normally lies in the sand. The Eindhoven resident was narrowly trumped by his French team mate Mathys Boisrame. Kay de Wolf from Eersels finished in fifteenth time in his first qualification for a World Cup match.

The first races in Russia will be held at 11:00 AM (MX2) and 12:00 PM (MXGP). Race 2 will start around 2 PM (MX2) and 3 PM (MXGP) Dutch time.
