Host country

Japan is the third largest economy in the world and an important trading partner of the Netherlands. In 2022, the Netherlands exported goods worth around €4.3 billion to Japan. In the same year, Japan exported goods worth €7.4 billion to the Netherlands. The Netherlands is also a major investment destination for Japan.

“2025 marks the 425th anniversary of the relationship between the Netherlands and Japan,” said Ms Schreinmacher. “Japan is an important partner for us when it comes to innovation, trade, culture and politics. Like the Netherlands, Japan faces pressing and complex challenges such as climate change, resource scarcity, food insecurity, an aging population and maintaining access to healthcare. Opportunities for Dutch companies and organizations mainly lie in the areas of the energy transition, agriculture and horticulture, life sciences and health, digitalization and culture. Various ministries and public and private actors are organizing activities in advance and during the expo to put these Dutch sectors on the map and help businesses to take advantage of the opportunities.
