Judoka Sanne Verhagen has ended her career with immediate effect. The 29-year-old Verhagen represented the Netherlands twice at the Olympic Games.
“I have decided to stop with top sport and to focus on my social career. I am grateful for the beautiful moments and experiences that top sport has given me. Judo is and will always be part of my life,” said Verhagen, who competed in the 57 kilogram class.
Last summer, Verhagen lost at the Tokyo Games in the second round to Nora Gjakova from Kosovo. Afterwards, she already showed doubts about continuing her career. “I’m going on vacation now, then I’m going to think and then I’ll see where the ship ends up. I turned my life upside down for the Games. Every athlete focuses on one thing and has to deal with highs and lows. I think you learn and get so much, for me it was absolutely worth it”, she said in Japan.
Eight years ago, Verhagen won bronze at the World Cup in Chelyabinsk, Russia. There have been no great successes in recent years.
