Jumbo-Visma will go to the Tour de France next year with a cycling team with ‘broad qualities’. That is what sporting director Merijn Zeeman says in response to the stage schedule of the 2022 Tour de France. “To win the Tour you need a team that is good in different areas,” says Zeeman. “There are fewer sprint opportunities than last year. Every day there is something in it that requires specific qualities and can lead to selections.”

According to Zeeman it is a beautiful and varied Tour. It starts with three stages in Denmark. With the Dane Jonas Vingegaard, the team, where leader Primoz Roglic stepped down due to injuries due to a fall, finished second last summer. “Vingegaard was the revelation of the Tour last year. We have not yet discussed the composition of our team at all, but there is a good chance that Jonas will go there”, said Zeeman. “That would be very special for him.”

The sporting director expects a hectic first week. “It is characterized by the time trial, wind and cobblestones. If we set up a climber’s team, you can get into trouble in the first week,” he says. “La Planche des Belles Filles is also a real executioner because the finish is back on the gravel path. As in 2019, there could be major differences. In the Alps, I notice that we cross the Galibier twice, so we drive a lot at altitude there.”

Zeeman expects the devil to be in the tail. “We finish with a time trial of 40 kilometers, which is quite long. However, with this course, large differences can also arise early on. With the insights we have, we will now brainstorm about the team. The Tour de France is a main goal, so we’re going to make a good plan for that.”
