Holstein Kiel has qualified for the semifinals of the German cup tournament for the first time in club history. The number two in the Second Bundesliga was 3-0 too strong for fourth division Rot-Weiss Essen in the quarterfinals.
In Essen it was a battle between two giant killers. Rot-Weiss Essen, playing in the Regionalliga West, eliminated Bayer Leverkusen from trainer Peter Bosz 2-1 in the quarterfinals. Kiel caused a sensation in the second round by eliminating Champions League winner Bayern on penalties.
Essen – which already won the cup in 1953 and was in the final again in 1994 – started the game in good spirits, but Kiel soon took matters in hand.
