Soccer player Lai Vroet faces three-and-a-half years in prison after admitting to exceeding drunk driving limits when he killed a four-year-old boy in a car crash on the highway.

Vloet told the court that he had “a couple of strong drinks” at a party just before the fatal crash on the A4 near Hoofddorp in November 2021.

Data from the car showed that Vloet was driving at a speed of about 200 km/h just prior to the collision. He said he hit his back and propelled him 200m forward.

Four-year-old Gio Roos, who was in the back seat, died in the crash.

Vloet, 27, and her passenger initially denied being the driver. A breath test taken by the player recorded an alcohol level of 515 micrograms per liter. This is more than double the legal limit.

Vloet was playing for Heracles Almelo as a midfielder at the time, but soon afterwards left for Kazakhstan and signed for Astana FK. He currently plays for FC Ural Yekaterinburg in Russia but attended a court hearing in Haarlem on Monday.

Prosecutors said Float drove “recklessly” and “irresponsibly” at high speed under the influence of alcohol. They asked the player to imprison him for three and a half years and have his license revoked for four years.

“It is difficult to seek a proper ruling in this case, as there is no ruling that can recognize the loss and suffering of the family.”

leaving for Russia

Arlette Schijns, an attorney for the victim’s family, has asked that Vloet be held in custody to prevent him from fleeing to Russia before sentencing. She claimed it was impossible to extradite him because the player requested Russian citizenship, but Vloet said she had no intention of making this country his permanent home.

Vloet said he remembers nothing about the crash other than the crash sound. “Before the accident, I was at a party in Amsterdam, which he left after an hour.

“We were supposed to be staying in a hotel in Amsterdam, but we changed our plans and decided to drive to Rotterdam.

He added: “I am in pain and very sorry. I will have to live with this for the rest of my life.”

The court will deliver its verdict on April 3rd.
