“The cause of the shortage is often sought in the wrong corner of football,” says Van der Zee. ,,As if whistling a match would be less attractive because of the emotions on the field. Nothing is less true. Of course there are incidents, again now, and they are dealt with very hard, but the vast majority of all matches are enjoyable.”
In 2016, amateur football in the Netherlands had approximately 34,000 referees. Now there are only more than 30,000. Of these, approximately 27,000 KNVB members are active as club arbitrators and 3,500 are registered as federation officials, according to Van der Zee. With 32,000 matches per match weekend, there is a considerable shortage.
