The football association KNVB will not change the starting times after the curfew has been set. The matches in professional football will also continue to be played in the evening during the period that the curfew applies, something that does happen in other Dutch top sports competitions. Due to the corona crisis, the curfew goes into effect on Saturday evening: between 9 p.m. and 4.30 a.m. no one is allowed on the street (without permission).
The government has given the sports associations the freedom to determine for themselves whether it is necessary to have matches played during curfews.
Ten million followers
According to the KNVB, the matches in professional football have a positive impact on society. Research shows that more than ten million Dutch people follow the duels in the Eredivisie, Kitchen Champion Division and the Women’s Eredivisie, live or in summary.
“It thus amuses many people who (have to) sit at home in the evening. Who do you a favor with afternoon matches?”, Said a spokesperson for the KNVB. “It also inspires youth to keep moving and exercising within the corona limitations, which has a positive impact on public health, in the short and long term.”
