Kremlin refutes secret operation under false flag in Ukraine | Abroad

The Kremlin has strongly denied that Russia is engaged in covert operations in eastern Ukraine that would serve as an excuse for Russian military intervention. An unnamed US official had told media outlets that Russia is conducting a “false flag operation” in the Donbass, a pro-Russian Ukrainian region rebelling against the Western-backed government in Kiev.

The Kremlin spokesman told Russia’s TASS news agency that such statements are completely unfounded and have not been confirmed by anything. An unnamed U.S. official had said, according to CNN news outlet, that Russia “pre-deployed a group of agents” to conduct a covert operation in eastern Ukraine. This could serve to “justify” an invasion of Ukraine by Russian forces.

Ukraine and the United States claim that Russia has gathered hundreds of thousands of troops just over the border into Russia and is preparing an invasion. That claim, in the eyes of the Kremlin, is merely an attempt to further heighten tensions. US security adviser Jack Sullivan said earlier this week that the foundations are being laid for an excuse to invade eastern Ukraine.

The most infamous false flag operations were in Europe in 1939, just hours before the start of World War II with the German attack on Poland. German soldiers disguised as Poles attacked a German radio station in the then German border town of Gleiwitz (now Gliwice). The ‘Polish’ attacks were led by the regime in Berlin to invade Poland the next morning.
