News | Aug 5, 2023 | 15:52

(Washington DC) – The Amsterdam Rainbow Dress arrives in Washington DC on May 15, two days before International Day Against Homophobia, Bisexuality and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT).

The Amsterdam Rainbow Dress is a 52-foot-tall work of art made from the flags of 68 countries where it’s illegal to be LGBTIQ+. Also included are the flags of eight countries where homosexuality can be punishable by death. The bodice of the dress is made from the Amsterdam city flag.

A dress is a living work of art. When a country changes its laws to favor the LGBTIQ+ community, that country’s flag is replaced with a rainbow her flag on her dress. Made in Amsterdam, this dress was shown for the first time at Europride Amsterdam 2016. Since then, the Amsterdam Rainbow Dress has traveled the world, highlighting the struggle for equality, inclusivity and tolerance. The Netherlands is a strong supporter of her LGBTIQ+ rights and in 2001 became the first country to legalize same-sex marriage.

The dress has been worn by models from the LGBTIQ+ community in various countries including Australia, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Greece, Luxembourg, Mozambique, Spain, South Africa, South Korea, Sweden and Taiwan. In 2022, the Amsterdam Rainbow Dress has traveled to every inhabited continent. In the United States, the dress was exhibited in New York City and San Francisco.

In Washington, the dress is worn by LGBTIQ+ and civil rights activist Maquia Greene and prominent community drug performer and LGBTIQ+ activist Vagenesis.

At press moments, the media will be invited to photograph and videotape the photo shoot and interview. Dutch Ambassador André Haspels; Arnut van Krimpen, founder of the Amsterdam Rainbow Dress Foundation; and Ryan Boss, Executive Director of Capital Pride Alliance. Later in the day, the media will be able to download a professional photo of the dress below. Embassy of the Netherlands | Flickr.
