Lift back at Slot: ‘If you want to get your level again, you have to start familiar’

Two years after his departure from AZ, Guus Til is back on the Dutch fields. At Feyenoord, he hopes to give his career a new impulse after adventures at Spartak Moscow and Freiburg have not brought him what he hoped.

At both clubs, Til was confronted with a game system in which he did not perform well. “I played at Spartak in the beginning. We played 4-3-3, but then a coach came and played with five (defenders, ed.). Then I went to Freiburg in the hope that it would be different .”

“We also started there with 4-4-2, but I came in injured and missed the first five games. Then we switched to 5-2-3, because it didn’t go well in the beginning. That’s how I came back.” with the same thing.”

‘Maybe it was just me too’

“That’s unfortunate, but I think if you have a lot of quality, you will always play,” admits Til. “I think it was also a bit of me, because maybe I didn’t have enough quality. If you are a player who is so incredibly good, trainers will always position you.”

The search for a team where he feels at home brought Til to Feyenoord through the arrival of Arne Slot, who succeeded Dick Advocaat as head coach in Rotterdam.

Til and Slot know each other well, because in the years that the midfielder caused a furore at AZ, Slot was assistant coach at the Alkmaarders. “He knows how to use my strength. That was very important to me in my choice to come here. I know I can be good, but then the conditions have to be right.”

“If you want to get back to your level, you have to start confidently,” said the attacking midfielder.

One-time international

At AZ, Til became one of the trendsetters in the Eredivisie and even became an international player. He wore the Orange shirt once, in March 2018 in a friendly match against Portugal, which the Dutch national team managed to win 3-0.

But where his buddy from then, Teun Koopmeiners, is in Frank de Boer’s European Championship selection, a return to Orange for Til is still a long way off.

He is now especially happy to be on the training field at Varkenoord. “Playing football, I was ready for that. It was like old times. I don’t have to speak English anymore, that’s always nice. It feels familiar.”
