Limburg-based company does not supply grass to Qatar: ‘Sometimes you have to make a decision on ethical grounds’ | Home

Hendriks Graszoden from Heythuysen in Limburg will not supply grass to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. The company is withdrawing due to, among other things, violating human rights in Qatar, a spokesperson told 1Limburg on Wednesday.

The discussion about the World Cup has flared up in recent weeks, following reports that more than 6,500 labor migrants have died in the construction of the stadiums, among other things.

Hendriks Graszoden previously supplied turf for the World Cup in Germany (2006), the European Championship in Switzerland (2008) and the European Championship in France (2016). The intention was that the company would also provide grass for the World Cup in Qatar. However, after visiting the country, the company changed its mind.

Sometimes you have to make a decision on ethical grounds

Spokeswoman Hendriks Graszoden

“In 2010 the presentation round was in Qatar and after that we tried to get the order. Over the years, we realized: this is not going to be it, ”said the spokeswoman. According to her, the working conditions during construction are bad. For example, many workers did not wear protective clothing. “We knew there were deaths, but were shocked when we heard that 6,500 people died during the work.”

In addition to the harsh working conditions, the quality standards for growing grass were also below par in Qatar. That was unacceptable to Hendriks Graszoden.

It is incomprehensible that FIFA does not intervene

Despite all the criticism at the World Cup in Qatar, the tournament, which should start in November 2022, is still going ahead for the time being. FIFA president Gianni Infantino said on Friday that he finds a boycott “not the right solution” and that “nothing will be achieved with it”.

Incomprehensible, says Hendriks Graszoden. “We were very surprised about this,” said the spokeswoman. “Our decision to withdraw is certainly a loss for the company. But sometimes you have to make a decision on ethical grounds. ”

As far as is known, Hendriks Graszoden is the first Dutch company that does not want to cooperate with the organization of the World Cup because of violations of human rights.
