After being taken to court by refugee agency Vluchtelingenwerk, the Dutch government was ordered to take steps to bring asylum seekers’ accommodation up to international standards.

A district court in The Hague has ruled that all refugees are entitled to a roof over their heads, “at least 4 square meters of space, lockable doors and windows that open” and adequate food. Drinking water and clean sanitation.

Vluchtelingenwerk brought a case During the summer, chronic overcrowding left up to 700 people bedridden on the grass outside the facility overnight.

Earlier this week, government inspectors blamed the situation in Tell Aper, finding families gathering in a “cold, draughty and dirty sports hall”. He criticized the lack of medical facilities.

The court granted Vluchtelingenwerk’s request for an injunction to compel the government to improve conditions in Tel Apel and emergency facilities in order to comply with EU guidelines and international standards such as the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.

But in response to a more lenient deal for Ukrainians fleeing Russian aggression, the government rejected arguments that all refugees should be treated equally. He said he was faced with a situation.

unaccompanied minors

The court also gave the government two weeks to improve conditions for unaccompanied minors in Tel Aper. Currently, about 300 children live alone, even though the facility only has space for her 55. Regulations state that you must be transferred to professional accommodation within 5 days.

A spokesman for Deputy Asylum Minister Eric van der Burg said he was in talks with Fulchtelingenwerk and would write to local authorities asking for help in housing the unaccompanied children.

“Vluchtelingenwerk’s concern is our concern,” the spokesperson said. “At the moment we are not offering asylum seekers what we have been able to offer for the past few years, but that is clear.

“Our priority is that minors are vulnerable and deserve to be accepted humanely in a safe environment,” he said.
