Flanders energy minister wants investment in Dutch nuclear power plant

Flanders may want to participate in the construction of two new nuclear power plants in the Netherlands. Flemish energy minister Zuhar Demir could envision joint investments as part of a “joint low-country energy plan,” Berga news agency quoted the minister as saying.

The Council of Ministers on Friday gave final approval for the construction of two new nuclear power plants due to be completed in 2035. They are preferably located in Borsel, Zeeland, not far from the Belgian border. A “reference budget” of €5 billion is now available.

The Dutch cabinet has embraced nuclear energy as part of its climate solution, but the Belgian federal government decided several years ago to shut down all nuclear power plants. But given the energy crisis that followed Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, earlier this year it was finally decided that he would keep the two reactors running longer.

Demir admitted that the Flemish broadcaster VRT does not actually have the authority to make decisions on energy production. “It’s by the federal government. But if the Netherlands starts building a new nuclear power plant on the border, I’m not going to stand on the sidelines.” I would like to start a “meaningful talk”.

A Jetten spokesman said cooperation with southern neighbors is “not out of the question” but it is too early to say any more about it. want a place and are prepared to pay for it. However, the division of public and private funds needs to be considered in more detail.
