National coaches are not allowed to include 23 but 26 players in the selection at the World Cup in Qatar. The impact of COVID-19 on players and the use of five substitutes per match has led to this. This is reported by Reuters news agency.
The national coaches and bobos will discuss whether they will take the step during their meeting with FIFA on Friday, prior to the draw. The decision also has to be ratified by the FIFA League Organizing Committee.
For Dutch players who are just about to fall by the wayside, it is good news that Louis van Gaal will soon be able to take three extra football players to Qatar.
UEFA already allowed 26 squads for the European Championship last year, although only 23 players could be in the match squad. The South American Football Federation CONMEBOL allowed teams in last year’s Copa América to call up 28 players.
