Major international media websites and British government site down: cause still unknown | Tech

Many major international media websites are currently down. The exact cause of the problem is not yet clear.

Websites currently experiencing issues include Amazon, Reddit, Spotify, and The New York Times. Some websites are completely unavailable while others have issues loading items such as fonts or images. Not only English-language websites are down. The French Le Monde and Israeli Haaretz are also experiencing problems.

503 error code

The problem seems to be caused by a major CDN problem. A Content Delivery Network (CDN) is a network of servers spread across different data centers in the world. This allows websites to serve their content faster. When users go to the websites, they are presented with a 503 error code.

The American provider of CDN networks, Fastly, says it is experiencing a malfunction. The company is investigating the cause of this. The outage is unlikely to last much longer. Fastly writes on their website that the problem has been found and the solution is being implemented.

Rare malfunction

But a small amount of CDN networks are able to keep up with the websites of large sites. Malfunctions are generally rare, but when they do occur, they have far-reaching consequences.
