Back then, baseball players had no choice in the US; if you were under contract, you could not enter into any other obligations, such as participating in the Games. It turned out to be extra sour for Bernadina, because baseball disappeared from the Olympic program after 2008.
Now that baseball-mad Japan has opted for a, probably one-off, return of the sport to the Olympic podium, Bernadina gets a second chance. “I definitely want to experience it. It’s high on my list.”
But whether the Netherlands will qualify is still the question. Strong countries such as Taiwan, Australia and China will participate in the qualifying tournament from 16 to 20 June, supplemented by two top countries from South America.
“That it will be tough? Certainly. But at the end of the day you just have to hit a ball. I believe in the players we have, the quality we have.”
